In April 2022, Double Identity released a new EP titled “Talking to Ghosts: Act I.”

Double Identity is comprised of 22-year-old twin sisters, Courtney (vocals and drums) and Arden Kurhayez (vocals and guitar). Together they blend both honesty and angst to “create upbeat songs reminiscent of the 2000s pop-rock they grew up on.” They began playing music at the young age of five and have been performing in and around the Chicagoland area for more than a decade.

The duo released their debut EP, “Small Talk,” in 2018 and followed it up with two singles, “Everything Reminds Me of You” in 2019 and “Your Anything” in 2020. Their two newest singles “Red Flags & Roses” and “All on You (You’ll Still Hate Me when You’re Sober” are off their sophomore EP, “Talking to Ghosts: Act I.”

Taking influence from Against The Current, Avril Lavigne, and early 2000s era Demi Lovato, the new EP is brimmed with angst and unflinching honesty detailing what it feels like to crawl out from under a toxic relationship and experience all the complicated emotions that surface in the aftermath. For this EP, Double Identity worked with Roye Robley (Meet Me @ the Altar, Belmont, Cleveland Avenue) to produce.

Opening the EP, “Never-ending” has that angsty early pop-rock feel with awesome guitar riffs and catchy lyrics. With lyrics such as “It’s the never-ending wanna try/never-ending didn’t mean to make you/don’t talk about it, though,” and “That’s why I’m talking to ghosts,” it’s hard not to like this song and sing along quickly. “Never-ending” set the tone for the rest of the EP.

“Red Flags & Roses,” the first single off the EP, follows “Never-ending.” This song is full of quick and loud drum beats and smooth guitar riffs. It feels like a song you’d hear played at a pop-rock music festival. The lyrics tell an ex what they hate about them and that they’re okay and how they have to be the bad guy. “Red Flags & Roses” is also just as catchy as “Never-ending,” if not more.

The slower song on the EP, “What She Did” offers a more emotional feel to the album. With lyrics like, “Sometimes I wanna do what she did, ruin your sh…so you have to get rid of it/scream at you in the rain ’cause it’s just so cinematic, and I’d hope you’d hate it/I would tell your friends, but you don’t have any I didn’t meet first/Bet It sucks to be you right now/Got away, but there’s no way out,” you can’t ignore the emotion that went into writing this song.

Full of catchy hooks, “All On You (You’ll Still Hate Me When You’re Sober)” is another song that will transport you to a music festival. Lyrics like, “Why’d you have to make it complicated,” “Honestly it’s a little embarrassing that I was ever with you,” and “Because I’m tired of forgiving your conveniently forgetting,” make this a fun breakup song while also having that angsty feel to it.

The final song on the EP, “the truth is…” wraps the EP up nicely. While incorporating lyrics like “I’m still talking to ghosts,” and “you’re still a ghost hanging around,” they tie back into “Never-ending” at the beginning of the EP. This song is about finally telling the truth about how angry they are about what happened in the relationship and taking back everything nice they’ve said about them in the past. “the truth is…” ends the EP on a high note, leaving listeners wanting more.

Altogether, “Talking to Ghosts: Act I” is full of catchy lyrics, hooks, fun guitar riffs, and precise drum beats. This EP doesn’t have one skip-able song on it. The duo of Double Identity has made some killer hits with this EP, and I can’t wait to hear more from them in the future.

Guitarist and vocalist for Double Identity, Arden Kurhayez, stated that”‘Talking to Ghosts: Act I’ is truly a soundtrack to the past few years; to be releasing the mess and madness that inspired some of these songs is kind of surreal. In all honesty, to know we’re now sharing these feelings with anyone who decides to listen is exciting and a little daunting, but I couldn’t be prouder of what we made.”
