We all love some good vulnerability in music. Songs that listeners can identify with play a significant part in the success of the song, and Nashville based, Quebec native, Lydia Sutherland, gave us one of those songs that many will relate to.
Sutherland’s newest single “look like your exes” throws listeners right into “ the infectious pop melodies and vulnerable ‘Nashville story-telling’ lyrics” that many listeners will understand.
“I wrote ‘look like your exes’ at a time where I felt overwhelmed and insecure about the way I looked compared to my boyfriend’s exes. This is the most vulnerable and honest song I’ve released yet,” Sutherland stated.
“look like your exes” is a poppy banjo-filled song that hooks you from the first few lines. Add in catchy bridges and an emotional chorus, and it isn’t difficult to get invested in Sutherland’s story of comparing herself to her boyfriend’s exes. With lyrics like “But you’re a breakup oversharer/ I’m a serial comparer/ A world-class sabotager/ With so much to offer,” listeners are bound to connect to Sutherland’s words on a personal level.
Sutherland mentioned that she was always an insecure person and compared herself to others thinking they have more to offer due to their looks, but that it took writing this song to realize that her differences are what made her boyfriend fall in love with her.
“I hope this song makes everyone feel heard and normal about the little things that make them different,” Sutherland commented.
Rooted in authenticity, honesty, and Sutherland’s ability to harness vulnerability, listeners are able to connect to the stories she conveys in her songs on personal and emotional levels. “look like your exes” is filled with beautifully crafted lyrics and melodies that translate many emotions into art that is relatable and captivating.
