Chicago duo Double Identity have released yet another hit with the latest single off their next EP, “Talking to Ghosts: Act II.”
“‘Honeymoon Phase’ is about missing that starstruck, rose-colored-glasses feeling of a first date, but not the sour aftertaste that follows when you find out Prince Charming might actually be a slimy little psychopath,” says the band on the new single.
“Honeymoon Phase” draws a lot of influences from bands/artists such as Against The Current, Avril Lavigne, and 2000s era Demi Lovato and Jonas Brothers.
From the start, Double Identity pulls you into the story with catchy lyrics, fantastic guitar riffs, and poppy drumbeats. With lyrics like, “I don’t want you back/You slimy little psychopath/Can’t escape the aftermath/You know what they say/I could be screaming at you from themezzanine/Instead I’m smiling at you through grittedteeth/It was good when it was me and who I/wanted you to be,” the duo describes wonderfully how many relationships go through the Honeymoon Phase and realize that it just isn’t going to work out.
Guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Arden Kurhayez said, “It’s easy to have a crush on someone’s potential early on when you’re both on your best behavior, and in [the song] we acknowledge that, while also biting back at the stereotypical romantic notion of forever. Not everything is supposed to last that long, and ‘Honeymoon Phase’ is saying, ‘Hey! It didn’t work out and that’s fine! Live in the honeymoon phase if you want – I think you’re kind of icky now, though, so I don’t want to do that again.’”
The band also stated that the song is for anyone who has ever gotten “the ick” after the honeymoon phase is over. They said, “It’s the ranting text you send to your group chat because they were right again and you get it now. It’s the wild-but-ridiculously-accurate nicknames that your friends still bring up sometimes because it’s two in the morning and it’ll never not be funny (and it’s easier than remembering their names.”
“Honeymoon Phase” is such a fun song. It’s something that is easily relatable to a lot of people out there while being upbeat and danceable. I know I’ll be belting out the lyrics this summer.
Double Identity will be performing the song for the first time on Sunday, July 16th at Beat Kitchen in Chicago, IL, alongside When the Sun Sets, Four Stars, Four Stars, Cleveland Avenue, and Cut Your Losses.
